What is ESI Return Filing?

ESI return filing refers to the submission of periodic statements and contributions to the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC).

It covers medical, sickness, maternity, disability, and pension benefits for employees under the Employees’ State Insurance Act, 1948.

Establishments with 10+ employees (in ESI notified areas) earning ₹21,000 or less per month.

Both employer and employee contributions are mandatory.

Contribution Rates (as of 2024): Employer: 3.25% of wages | Employee: 0.75% of wages

Documents/Information Required

  • ESIC registration number of the establishment
  • Employee details: Name, date of birth, ESIC number
  • Wages/salary details of employees
  • Bank account details for contribution payment
  • Challan details of previous contributions

Steps to File ESI Returns

Register the Establishment with ESIC

Obtain ESIC registration number.

Login to ESIC Employer Portal

Access the official portal: https://www.esic.in/

Prepare ESI Contribution Statement

  • Include all eligible employees and their monthly wages.
  • Calculate employer + employee contribution.

Submit Return Online

Upload the monthly contribution statement on the portal.

Make Payment

Pay the total contribution using online payment mode or challan.

Acknowledgment

Save the confirmation for records.

Due Dates: Monthly Contribution by 15th of the following month. Half-yearly returns for reconciliation are also required.
